It’s said to be the biggest electronic music conference and festival in Asia and it’s back again to offer a sumptuous buffet of sounds. This time around, it has set its sights on Zouk Genting, the clubbing oasis located some 6,000 feet above sea level.
The Wired Music Week (WMW) was formed in KL in 2018, intended to pool together professionals of the electronic music industry, from hopeful artistes to talent managers and practically everyone in between. The theme selected for this year focuses on the matter of sustainability within the global electronic music industry.
A Meeting Of The Minds
On the conference side of things, this topic of cultivating sustainability, whether it pertains to the environment, music creation, festivals, branding or more, is put under the microscope as various talks approach it from different angles. Aside from Zouk, the adjoining outlets of Empire, Redtail, and FUHU are where these will take place.
Keynotes, debates and industry panels address issues such as ‘Music Sustainability: Label Deals vs. Independent Releases’, ‘Radio in a Streaming Age’, Music Festivals: Make, Break or Sustain’ and ‘Going Green: The Music Industry’s Impact on The Environment’.
Wired Black, a newly introduced WMW pillar, looks into the development of electronic music’s underground scene. Topics unravelled here include ‘Young & Thirsty: The Art of Moving The Young Over To The Underground’, ‘Queer History and Its Role In Keeping The Underground Alive’ and ‘The Art of Negotiation – Being A Music Director In Asia, Today & Yesterday’, and more.
Fresh this year as well is the re:Wired pillar, explores the connections between the realms of music and gaming, particularly esports. WMW partners with Sync Summit for this, introducing a range of discussion platforms that, among others, look at ‘Getting Your Music In The Game’ and ‘Steps For Success In Sync’. Sync Summit CEO Mark Frieser expressed his eagerness to be a part of WMW, saying, “We are delighted to partner with WMW to help provide attendees with the practical tools they need to succeed in sync and composition for games.”
Mixing it up are a number of workshops on the side, notably ‘Revealed Recordings Pres. Social Advertising For Artists’, ‘Revealed Recordings Pres. How To Get Signed By Record Label’, ‘Musiio Pres. AI & The Future of Music Search For DJs’ and ‘Laidback Luke Pres. The Power of Creative DJing’.
Across these avenues of discourse and learning are the men and women who know the subjects on hand inside out – dozens of professionals have been enlisted to fuel the discussions, with the likes of music label founders, top management of entertainment entities, and established artistes from a myriad of backgrounds lending precious takeaways from their many years of experience.
A Gathering Of The Greats
No edition of WMW will be complete without an impressive line-up of industry heavyweights who come to not only impart their valuable insight, but share their music as well. This third instalment of the event sees mega talents of the club scene, including Markus Schulz of Germany, Arkham Knights of the UK, Irwan of the Netherlands, and Nakadia of Thailand. These skilled deejays will ensure that the rhythms and drops are on point as Zouk’s dancefloor is properly tested during the after parties!
Consult with previous WMW attendees and they will quite likely agree that this is undoubtedly a must-attend event for anyone who lives and breathes electronic music.
