Just as the sea knows no boundaries, so do melodies too. Floating on these musical waves, John Legend is reaching our shores to pull our heartstrings this month. The nine-time Grammy Award winning singer is set to hold a concert on 23 September at the Plenary Hall, KLCC, following his run of sold-out shows in over 60 cities in America.
Of emotions, of love, of despair and of hope, Legend’s music explores and embodies a lot of emotional territory. His “All of Me Tour” in Kuala Lumpur will strike fire in the heart of men, and bring tears to the eyes of women. Fans can expect to hear his current smash hit single All of Me that has sold over four million copies, in addition to a mix of well-loved songs from previous albums.
Legend developed his passion for music at an early age, which was even stronger than his passion for fine clothes. He honed his craft playing piano and performing in his church choir. While in college, Legend served as president and musical director of a co-ed jazz and pop a cappella group called Counterparts. Despite landing a job as a strategic management consultant after graduating in 1999, Legend spent his leisure time writing and performing music, and persistenty knocking on doors looking for a record deal.
Legend rewards his fans, crooning out smooth slow-jams
His music career started gaining momentum through a series of similar collaborations with established artists. It wasn’t until collaborating with Lauryn Hill on her song Everything Is Everything that his career started to bloom. He has lent his voice to the likes of Magnetic Man, Kanye West, Jay Z, Alicia Keys and Fort Minor. His 2004 debut album Get Lifted sparked his elevation to stardom, earning him multiple Grammy awards including Best R&B Album, Best New Artiste and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
The follow-up, 2006’s platinum selling Once Again earned Legend another Grammy, and his 2008’s Evolver, led by the hit single Green Light featuring Andre 3000, also scored him the Grammy for Best R&B Album. Legend’s third album, All of Me peaked on both the iTunes charts and US Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia, Canada, Ireland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, and Netherland.
Taking R&B to the next level, Legend exudes confidence on stage, living up to his name
When not earning awards for his music, Legend has been lauded for his philanthropy and activism, including the 2009 CARE Humanitarian Award for Global Change and 2010 BET Humanitarian of the Year award. Giving back is a constant in Legend’s life. He serves on the boards of several education equality organizations and has contributed music to raise funds for US veterans, African AIDS treatment programs, gender equality, and anti-poverty campaigns. On top of this, Legend was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people.
Legend wants to change the world as much as he wants to change contemporary music
