29 January 2019: A joint collaboration to promote Malaysia’s tourism industry internationally
Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airports has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Joint International Tourism Development Programme (JITDP) at Sama-Sama Hotel, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Tourism Malaysia YB Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi and Deputy Minister of Transportation Datuk Musa Hj Yusof, along with Director General of Tourism Malaysia YM Raja Azmi Raja Nazuddin and Group Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Airports who represented both agencies.
Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airports will contribute up to RM10 million each for the JITDP and the fund will be disbursed to eligible industry players for marketing purposes and to promote Malaysia internationally.
The programme involves planned initiatives such as airlines collaboration, operation of inaugural and charter flights, as well as promotion of high-yield niche tourism.
A similar programme was implemented by Tourism Malaysia and Malaysia Airports last year, which covered 20 main projects for short and long haul markets in 2018, with Malaysia Airports continuing to play their role as the major airport operator and to enhance route development at its airports.
In 2018, Malaysia Airports has welcomed 11 new airlines and more than 40 new services (routes) to international destinations nationwide, registering a total of 99 million passenger movements for Malaysia, of which 51.6 million were international passengers.
Malaysia’s traffic performance has been mainly driven by international sectors as international passenger traffic makes up 50% of total passenger traffic.
