FIFA World Cup fever swept over Sunway University last week and brought with it a raft of VIPs to mark the start of tournament. Present was H.E. Carlos Martins Ceglia and H.E. Manuel Balaguer Salas, Ambassadors of Brazil and Argentina respectfully, who each donned their country’s football jerseys for the momentous occasion.
As the sounds of the Nessun Dorma aria rang in the foyer of the Sunway University building to kick-off the event, spectators were reminded of possible sleepless nights ahead with some matches being screened in the early hours of the morning.
Thanking both Ambassadors for gracing the event, Sunway Education Group and Sunway University Senior Executive Director Dr Elizabeth Lee also gently reminded students to keep their eyes on the ball when it came to their studies.
“This global event in Russia provides Sunway University with an ideal platform to showcase our cultural diversity in the Sunway community. Of the 32 nations taking part in the World Cup, over half are represented by the international students here at Sunway University,” said Dr Lee.
With a series of events, activities, games and a live drone soccer game planned for July, the Sunway University campus is keeping the spirit of the beautiful game alive for the entire duration of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Even the iconic Sun-Birds sculpture are joining in on the fun of the beautiful game, dressed in the yellow jersey of Brazil’s superstar Neymar Jr. and the blue and white stripes of Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
