As far as attention-grabbers go, the title of this show is right up there, causing giggles at best, and stoking curiosity at worst. The presence of the word ‘pomp’ in it is perceptible enough, but the rest might not be immediately apparent to those who don’t speak Malay. Perempuan is the language’s word for ‘girl’, and thus, the pun of a show name reveals an idea of its content.
The fact that it takes place on International Women’s Day should be helpful in putting two and two together too – it’s a show for women, by women.
Despite its supposedly feminist angle, it’s not just for the fairer sex, as everyone is welcome to the show. Light-hearted female-based narrations and revelations are the order here, shedding light on what the average Jane faces in her daily life through rib-tickling recitals. Think girly gossip sessions and #girlpower-worthy moments, and you’re not far off.
From the evolving roles of women to their growing leverage, there are numerous age-old notions and trending topics to be picked over in this magnetic show.
Wrapping these juicy morsels of insightful feminine wisdom in humour are a highly valued pair. Dubbed as Malaysia’s Queen of Comedy, Joanne Kam is an instantly recognisable force in the local comedy circuit, and on her side is none other than fellow legendary funny lady, Shamaine Othman. Both these doyennes of the scene should have little trouble making the audience double over with mirth.
Joining them are three other glowing lights in entertainment; actresses-singers Chelsia Ng and Nadia Aqilah, and emerging comedienne Filzah Azmi. Between them, expect not just captivating, but eye-opening sketches, stories and melodies.

“When working on this show, we were looking to entertain but at the same time empower and create awareness through stand-up comedy, skits and songs. We want to celebrate womanhood!” enthused Shamaine.
In yet another example of POMPuan’s dedication towards women, a portion of its ticket sales will be donated to Mercy Malaysia, bolstering medical programs that provide aid to women refugees in Malaysia.
