At barely 21 years of age, Shawn Mendes is well on his way to what many would consider world domination. In his relatively short whirlwind career, the Canadian native has produced three number one albums, amassed 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify, has billions of views on YouTube and counts a legion of fans across the globe.
Little wonder with pitch-perfect voice, model good looks and a work ethic that sees him hitting the gym every single day, taking vocal lessons twice a day and spending countless hours writing music. Meanwhile, he’s also found time to be the face of a Calvin Klein ad campaign and star in the highly successful dystopian TV show The 100. Add to this a gruelling tour schedule and plenty of philanthropic efforts and you might be forgiven for wondering where he finds the time for it all.
This month, the hot new poster-boy of pop is hitting KL while on embarking on his fourth world tour in support of his self-titled third studio album. Marking a milestone for him, this tour contains his first full stadium show in his hometown of Toronto – sold out, of course, minutes after he announced it on social media.
Containing the massive Señorita with Cuban-American singer Camila Cabello, currently ruling the radio waves, Mendes’ third album is littered with his trademark guitar-driven pop and catchy rhythms that contain elements of blues and R&B. While much of his past material has targeted tweens and teenagers, his new album showcases a change in musical direction with more maturity in his repertoire and a rock-funk-inspired sound.
Read any interview with him and what shines through immediately is his love of performing and adoration of fans – did we mention that one of his dogmas is to never refuse a selfie? So if you happened to catch him when he touches down at Axiata Arena this month, try your luck if he’s close by!
