As one of the premier golfing tournaments held on Malaysian soil, the Maybank Championship has garnered quite the following over the years. Its call is regularly answered by some of the best people to swing a golf club, and this year is no different.
Over 150 of the top players from the European Tour and the Asian Tour – including legends such as Swede Henrik Stenson, Austrian Bernd Wiesberger, Japanese Yuta Ikeda and Malaysian Gavin Green – are set to leave their mark on the green at this co-sanctioned, $3-million-prize-purse event.
The rolling grounds in question belong to the Palm Course at Saujana Golf & Country Club, a particularly tricky course built where an oil palm plantation once stood. There are plenty of bunkers and water hazards to catch unsuspecting players off-guard here. Towering palm trees, vestiges of the land’s former designation, also present an imposing threat to poorly struck balls. There is no mystery to why the course is also known as ‘The Cobra’ to the initiated. It’s a fitting venue for the Championship, according to Datuk Abdul Farid Alias, Group President and CEO of Maybank. “The course challenges our golfers, while the resort’s facilities ensure that guests enjoy the many experiential elements on offer. Whether they come to experience the game, see the various community engagements we have for visitors, or just mingle while enjoying our 5-star hospitality – we have something for everyone.”
Admirable To A Tee More than just a typical golfing event, the Championship serves as an enabler for unity and a springboard for budding talents, as Datuk Farid explains. “Like in 2017, we will offer a total of five slots to promising young players from the ASEAN region, giving them the chance to pit their skills against some of the world’s best golfers.” The tournament also backs CSR programmes via MaybankHeart, which is the Maybank Group’s digital social fund-raising platform created to extend the audience reach of NGOs and charitable bodies. The MaybankHeart Silent Auction is an example, where interested parties can bid for collectible merchandise bearing the autographs of decorated golfers!
