Using the complex themes of language and the key roles it plays in many aspects of society, The Language Archive runs for six nights and explores the science of language beautifully.
The play was written by American playwright Julia Cho and follows the story of George, a young linguist, whose personal life intertwines with his ongoing research about a language with only two remaining native speakers. While the survivors Alta and Resten have a relationship so strained that they refuse to speak to one another, George’s wife Mary has left him and his assistant Emma is keeping her love for him a closely-guarded secret.
Resten, Emma, George and Alta are the main characters in The Language Archive
Director Ghafir Akbar said: “In this play, we are asking our audiences to look around and notice the ways we are dealing with the diverse languages around us.
“This play reveals how easily we use language to manipulate meaning, thought, and intention either consciously or subconsciously. The characters in this play hide behind language and words, and conceal their true intentions, just like us.”
The KuAsh Theatre in TTDI is the setting for this heart-warming play with themes to which every audience member can fully relate. Award-winning Malaysian actor Gavin Yap takes on George, bringing transparent emotion to a character facing a multitude of professional and personal issues.
