Now in its sixth edition, the annual George Town Festival has long been a celebration of all that the exotic isle of Penang has to offer and it promises to be even bigger and better this time around. With music, dance, culture, gastronomy, performing arts, films, workshops, art exhibitions and so much more, there is truly something for everybody on the streets of George Town this month.
Among the acts performing are the Spanish all-male dance troupe Titanium, whose exhilarating stage performances fuse together flamenco with many other genres of dance. Also on show will be the beautifully-told Iranian play Slow Sound of Snow; the question of what a person really is with the spectacularly-choreographed Australian troupe Am I; and Japan’s Robot Theatre Project presents a creative re-imagining of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis, in which the leading character morphs into an android rather than a bug.
Alongside the GTF will be the Butterworth Fringe Festival held on 15 and 16 August in the mainland city of Butterworth, the main port to the island of Penang. The inaugural ‘Festival within a Festival’ will feature a number of performances and art installations from both local and international artists, musicians, designers and collaborators.
The aim of the month of festivities is to build on Penang’s rapidly-growing reputation as ‘a premier arts and culture hub in the ASEAN region’ – a renown that has been building ever since the city of George Town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its stunning architecture and unique artistic murals.
While Penang is a stunning place to visit any time of year, the George Town Festival elevates it to ‘must-see’ status throughout August.
