The roles of Odette and Odile in the quintessential classic ballet Swan Lake are ones that every ballerina dreams of playing from the moment they put on their pointe shoes. To watch a prima ballerina dance those roles is something unique, and to watch one from one of the greatest ballet companies in the world do so is a truly special event.
This month you can experience that as Malaysia lays out the red carpet for the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre and acclaimed Russian dancer Irina Kolesnikova, who will be taking on the aforementioned roles.
Curiously, its 1877 premiere at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow was met with a less than lukewarm reception, no one at the time thinking that Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake would go on to become one of the most loved and mesmerising of ballets.
The tragic tale of doomed, but true love between Prince Siegfried and Odette the Swan Queen takes in the full rainbow of emotions, from celebration to romantic tragedy as they go up against the evil Baron Von Rothbart and his daughter Odile. Set to the timeless music by Tchaikovsky, the ballet has become the most frequently performed in history – more so than ever since director Darren Aronofsky’s ode to it, Black Swan in 2010.
As Russia’s most successful of international touring ballet companies, the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre is committed to bringing full-scale, quality-filled productions of the classics to audiences around the world. Led by multi award-winning
prima ballerina Kolesnikova, the company has staged several masterpieces such as Giselle, Don Quixote, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty on international stages, its dancers able to adapt instantly and with ease to venues everywhere.
Overflowing with purity, grace and fluid perfection, it’s not hard to see why Kolesnikova’s name carries the substantial star power it does, dominating the stage effortlessly with her dazzling technique and precision. Catch her and the rest of the company in the flesh at the Istana Budaya.
