Ever since its first appearance in Moscow in 1877, Swan Lake has become one of the most popular classical ballets in the world. Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, this ballet pulls at the heartstrings with its bitter-sweet but powerful love story.
Ballet West brings the timeless piece to Genting Highlands this month, making it the first full-length Swan Lake ballet to be performed by a full-UK cast in Malaysia. The 150-minute production performed over six days tells the story of a prince who falls in love with a cursed princess (White Swan) but finds himself deceived by a lie that ends their fate.
Tragic Romance
It was love-at-first-sight when Prince Siegfried lays eyes on Princess Odette, cursed along with her maidens, to become swans by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. While on the search for a wife, the prince happily announces his decision to marry Odette at a royal party. This news is heard by Rothbart who wants to stop the marriage as it would break the curse.
As cunning as he is, Rothbart transforms his daughter Odile into the Black Swan and successfully tricks Siegfried into falling for her. As the prince proclaims his love to Odile, Rothbart puts Odette under a curse which makes her a swan for life. Heartbroken, Odette takes her own life and Siegfried joins her when he finally discovers the upsetting truth.
