Ballet demands rigorous dedication to master, requiring not only the body, but also the mind, to be in peak physical condition. The delicate-seeming art form involves highly technical, precise movements and draws on influences from a variety of dance forms. To become a principal dancer, the highest rank in a professional company, requires strength, commitment and a considerable amount of talent, along with a willingness to devote one’s life to it.
To best appreciate it is to see ballet being performed by the masters, and this opportunity comes via the International Ballet Gala at Istana Budaya, featuring individuals from some of the most well respected ballet companies in the world, who dance in both solo and pas de duex (duets) routines.
Joining the list of dancers is the eminent Yuan Yuan Tan, principal dancer with the San Francisco Ballet (considered to be among the best in the world), who was promoted from soloist in an unprecedented two years and has danced lead roles in Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, Nutcracker, Tomasson/ Possokhov’s Don Quixote, Morris’ Sylvia and many more, as well as having won countless awards. She will be performing a solo piece as well as a pas de duex from act two of Giselle.
Other principal dancers in the gala include Joseph Walsh from the Houston Ballet, Jin Yao from the Hong Kong Ballet, Ena Hirose from the Ena Ballet in Japan and Hiranao Takahashi from the Northern Ballet Theatre in the UK, all with a sterling global reputation. Malaysia’s Steve Goh, an up-andcoming star, will also make his mark in what is sure to be one of the most illustrious dance events the country has ever witnessed.
Organised by The Dance Society of Malaysia and Danceworks Production, the gala is also charity-centric, with part of the proceeds to be channelled to Hospis Malaysia, Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation, Lions Lyfe-Line Leukemia Fund, Yayasan Sin Chew, Living Hope Malaysia, Persatuan SLE Malaysia and the SPCA.
This exceptional gala event at the Istana Budaya runs for two days, so make sure to book your tickets early to witness the beauty of ballet performed by some of the world’s finest dancers.
