31 October 2017:Collaboration set to enhance education, research and training in statistics
Sunway University and the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) have joined forces to promote statistical research and comprehension with the signing of a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the campus today.
Representing the university, Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University signed the MoU together with Yang Berusaha Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician of the Department of Statistics.
The momentous event was witnessed by Professor Pua Eng Chong, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Sunway University and Nazaria Baharudin, Deputy Chief Statistician, Social and Demographic Programme, Department of Statistics Malaysia.
“This partnership would encourage DOSM officers to share accurate methodology in producing and interpretation official statistics. This will surely increase statistical literacy among academicians and students. We hope this synergy would add value to DOSM community in improving skills mainly in journalistic and technical writing, which are acknowledged at the domestic and international standard,” said Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin.
The MoU allows the university’s students and academic staff to access the statistical resources, applied knowledge and expertise available at the Department of Statistics. These include population, gross domestic product (GDP), inflation, trade, labour, and various other social and demographic data.
“Given the vital role of statistics in an increasingly complex economy, we are confident the collaboration with the national statistical agency in deepening expertise in statistical sciences and sharing resources for research and training marks another milestone for the university in its quest for excellence in delivering quality education and high-impact research and training activities,” said Professor Graeme Wilkinson.
“We hope that findings from relevant research and studies from the collaboration by our schools and faculties would contribute to the country’s National Transformation Programme.”
