The Sunway Group recently opened its first Traditional and Complimentary Medicine Centre (Sunway TCM Centre), which champions a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients. The holistic nature of the Centre combines traditional and cultural practise of the East with modern, technology-driven methods of the West.

The new centre is staffed by an expert team of professionals that have extensive training in Western medicine and TCM, allowing for personalised and tailored treatment plans that include the best of both fields of medicine for each patient. Understanding of normal functions and disease ability, prevention of illness and promotion of self-healing ability are key to the philosophy here.
Among the practises offered at the Centre are Chinese herbal medicine, dietary therapy, acupuncture, moxibustion, tui na (Chinese massage), guasha (skin scraping) and more.
The launch was officiated by Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia Dr. Lee Boon Chye and Sunway Group Chairman and Founder Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah AO, both of whom elaborated on the prevalence of traditional and complementary medicine throughout the world and its contribution to health in their speeches.
“170 out 194 Member States of the World Health Organisation (WHO) have now accorded official recognition of TCM. Many of them have even developed laws, policies and programmes in this sector,” said Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah AO.Tan Sri Dr. Jeffrey Cheah giving his welcome speech
The reputation of traditional medicine has also soared since Tu You You, a chemist from the China Academy of Traditional Medicine, won the Noble Prize in Medicine in 2015, for deriving an anti-malaria drug from sweet wormwood.
In 2018, Malaysia launched the National TCM Blueprint 2018-2027, which serves to facilitate the regulation of TCM and its integration into the health system, while also encouraging its economic development to meaningfully contribute to Malaysia’s healthcare, economic and socio-cultural goals over the next decade.
