To curb the mounting ‘e-waste’ (electrical or electronic waste) that has started inundating landfills and incinerators, Rukun Tetangga of SS14 and USJ13 has put into a motion an e-waste recycling programme in collaboration with KITAReward.
Dubbed Re-Tech, the initiative encourages residents to deposit their old or obsolete electronic appliances at designated collection points in the area. Residents who recycle will earn rewards which can be exchanged for cash vouchers at Sunway Pyramid.
“We have found that there has been an issue with indiscriminate dumping of electronic items in neighbourhoods so we decided to encourage people to recycle. By doing so, we can offer incentives to those who participate in recycling their electronic waste and at the same time allow us to dispose of that waste properly and responsibly while generating some revenue for Rukun Tetangga SS14 and USJ13,” said TH Teoh, Chairman of the SS14 FT.
Also present at the launch was Sunway Malls Chief Operating Officer Kevin Tan who underscored Sunway’s commitment to Sustainable Development Goals and in providing incentives to the community to help encourage e-waste recycling.
Depending on the items brought in for recycling, residents can receive RM5 Slappy Cakes vouchers, RM10 SnacKing vouchers or RM20 Sanook vouchers. Points will be granted for each item to determine the value of vouchers given out.
Accepted items include old, spoiled or unwanted TVs, radios, mobile phones, refrigerators, washing machines, laptops, keyboards, monitors, CPUs, modems, printers, tablets, mini servers, CD drives and electrical home equipment among others.
“With proper collection points and a reward system, we are confident that this initiative will encourage residents to send their e-waste for recycling and reduce indiscriminate dumping at the same time,” said USJ13 RT Chairman Kelvin Chew.
