The award-winning Liver & Lung Productions is set to make its silver screen debut with the short film Mahsuri (& Other Peculiar Tales) this December.
A contemporary re-telling of a famous Malaysian legend, the film follows Adam, an autistic boy who stumbles upon a mysterious book of folklores that transports him and his friends into a musical world of magic and wonder. In this instance, Adam is teleported to 18th century Langkawi, where he must help magical Mahsuri, wife of warrior Wan Derus, escape from the wrath of her mother-in-law, Mahura.
Liver & Lung brought the story to life on stage in 2017, where it ended up winning an award at the Boh Cameronian Art Awards. It joins the company’s other production, Sepet The Musical, as a “Cammie” winner.
Ahead of the film’s release, musical single In My Arms will be dropping on 6 November, giving listeners a taster of what’s to come on screen. Composed by Liver & Lung co-founder Shafeeq Shajahan, it depicts the epic romance between Mahsuri and Wan Derus, the protagonists of one of Malaysia’s most famous legends.
The song, which mark’s the company’s first foray into digital music soundtracks, features the vocals of Badrish (co-composer of Sepet The Musical) and Irena Taib (from The Impatient Sisters).
“In My Arms is a song that means so much to me. It is romantic, soulful and, most importantly, inspired by the melodies my mother used to sing to me when I was younger. It will hopefully breathe new air into the incredible love affair between Mahsuri and her husband Wan Derus. I am so excited for you to hear it,” said Shafeeq Shajahan, who also directed the short film.
