Game On! The Penang Asia Pacific Masters Games 2018 brings one week of regional sporting fun
A fresh event on the sports calendar, the Asia Pacific Masters Games (APMG) sees its inaugural iteration transpiring in Penang this month. Labelled as the first-ever masters multi-sport event in Asia, APMG is expected to pull in not just aspiring athletes from the Asia Pacific region, but countless spectators keen on catching the action that takes place for nine days.
Held across more than a dozen venues in the state on both ends of the Penang Bridge, the event boasts a wide variety of sports and competitions, numbering over 20 in total. The usual suspects such as athletics, swimming, weightlifting, hockey and shooting are on the list, but there are also some left-field ones in a sporting event of this scale – the lion dance competition being a standout.
Beyond the Games
Uniquely, there are no professional qualification requirements to participate, as APMG is fashioned as a global festival of sports open to participants of eligible age (most sports require a minimum age of 30 to compete) and all capabilities!
Some 10,000 participants, whose countries lie within the aforementioned area, are anticipated to show up. When it comes down to the nitty gritty, it’s not quite a free-for-all, where a younger trained professional will hopelessly outclass an older casual participant.
Those who sign up are set to compete within not only their own age group, but suitable category as well, which range in intensity from social, recreational and finally competitive. In essence, there is a place for everyone to flex their abilities, no matter if they are in it for the laughs or to win.
‘Beyond the Games’ is the APMG 2018 tagline, signalling that it is not just a sporting event as much as an avenue to foster friendship and goodwill. It is also an opportunity to nurture the growth of masters sports in the Asian region. Witness this ethos in action from the opening ceremony on 8 September to the closing ceremony exactly a week later!
