Bicycle fanatics will be jumping for joy at the prospect of taking part in the second installment of OCBC Cycle Malaysia, the country’s premiere mass cycling challenge, designed for cyclists of all skill levels and ages. Taking place over three days, from 11 to 13 January 2013, cyclists will travel through the heart of Kuala Lumpur via a 12.1km route that takes in some of the most iconic sites of the city. This eco-friendly sporting event also offers the chance to donate to a number of charities through The Corporate Charity Challenge, whereby 90% of the entrance fee is given back to charities. Iconic
The highly successful inaugural challenge in 2011 drew some 3,000 riders who gathered at Dataran Merdeka to cycle through the city. This year’s starting point will be the twin towers. Cyclists will cut through towards Masjid Jamek and loop around Jalan Parlimen towards the second leg of the route which will take them down Jalan Tun Ismail, eventually hitting Jalan Dang Wangi and back to the lap point at Jalan Ampang (see the maps below for the route).
A total of six categories make riding accessible to everyone, ranging from The Tricycle Ride, a 100m sprint for the little ones, to The Challenge, a 48km race that will loop four times around the route. In between there is a 5.5km Kids’ Ride, a 30-minute Junior Challenge, a 24km Community Ride, and for those partial to the popular folding bicycle, the 24km Foldies Community Ride. These events will be spread across the weekend, with the long distance rides to take place on Sunday.
Running in tandem with the rides and challenges and dealing with both subjects will be the Cycling and Lifestyle Village showcasing a myriad of products and deals on the two subjects. Speaking on the Village, Managing Director of Spectrum Worldwide –event owners and organisers – said “It’s an opportunity for cycling and lifestyle brands to showcase their products, so this is not just about bicycle components and parts, it’s about wellness, massages, travel companies etc”. All registered participants will have a chance to go through the Village and the opportunity to sit through educational seminars covering a range of topics such as health, nutrition, and exercise. With an expected 80 exhibitors, the Village will be the ideal place to brush up on your health knowledge or check out offers on the hottest spas in town.
