27 July 2017: MoU fosters cultural link between Malaysia and Australia An MoU has been signed between the Artistic Director of Adelaide Festival Centre’s OzAsia Festival, Joseph Mitchell and Founding Chief Executive Officer of the Cultural Economic Development Unit (CEDU) Malaysia, Izan Satrina Mohd Sallehuddin. This will ensure ongoing cultural exchange and sharing of artistic performances between Australia and Malaysia. The signing, which was witnessed by South Australia’s Minister for the Arts, The Hon. Jack Snelling MP and Malaysian Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Mohamad Nazri Abdul Aziz, coincided with 60 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Malaysia. This is the first MoU to be signed between CEDU Malaysia and an Australian arts organisation.
With the support of the Malaysian government, the CEDU has created a 5 year strategy (2017-2022) to build a vibrant, sustainable and ambitious cultural economy for Malaysia. Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri said, “We are excited to see the formation of such strong connections, deepening the already strong relationship between Australia and Malaysia. This MoU reflects our commitment to elevate Malaysian arts to a wider shared community and continue creating lasting people-to-people links.” The MoU will not just enable Malaysian performances at the 2017 OzAsia Festival but also provide a premier platform for contemporary artists, regional Indigenous arts and high profile arts companies from Malaysia to reach the audiences and the arts industry in Australia. Likewise, Australian arts industry professionals will be facilitating masterclasses and knowledge-sharing activities in Malaysia. In turn, the CEDU will be arranging a suitable arts manager from Malaysia to engage professional development internship at Adelaide Festival centre.
