For those of us without any aviation background, you would think that the best we can do to fly an aircraft, without going through the entire application and certification processes required, is to take off in a virtual plane on a flight simulator. As immersive as this may be, it just doesn’t beat the real thing.
Happily, there is a way to chalk up genuine flight time, in an actual plane, without needing any prerequisite qualifications. All you have to do is to show up at the airport and rake up the nerves to command the light aircraft sitting on the tarmac before you.
If it all seems like a mere flight of fancy, One Day Pilot begs to differ. The outfit deals in a multitude of aeronautical activities, such as skydiving, helicopter sightseeing and aerial photography, but it’s the one-day pilot adventure that started it all. “After being granted the amazing opportunity to fly a light aircraft, I realised it would appeal to individuals who aren’t pilots, but still want to cross the experience off their bucket list. Thus, I made the decision to form One Day Pilot,” its Director, Alice Chin, reveals.
Plane And Simple
Although it may sound like a complicated task trying to fly for the first time, it really isn’t.
A flight instructor stays by your side, moulding you into a capable pilot with generous guidance, while catching any missteps that may occur. It’s so simple, even those as young as 12 can sign up.
It’s definitely an exhilarating 30 minutes or so behind the yoke. Assuming control in the co-pilot’s seat, keeping an eye on the instruments, feeling the engine’s rumble, watching the clouds through the blurry propeller – there’s nothing quite like it!
Commanding perspectives of the landscape below adds tremendously to the sense of awe. There are two scenic flight routes, both of which start and end at Subang Airport. One sees the plane making an arc right over KL city and its picturesque landmarks, while the other sweeps above Port Klang and its maritime wonders. There are simply countless views to drink in.
Depending on the plane, which is either a Cessna or a Piper, up to three additional passengers are allowed on board to share the fun!
