Located in the heart of KL’s golden triangle is a collection of buildings that look as though they’ve been lifted from a traditional Malay village. Nestled among greenery, this creative hub is the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex, and each year it springs to life with National Craft Day – or Hari Kraf Kebangsaan (HKK) in Malay.
The name itself is a bit of a misnomer as the event extends over a two-week period, and gathers together a wide range of local craft entrepreneurs who set up shop to display, promote, demonstrate and sell their craft. It’s undoubtedly one of the best times of the year to get a comprehensive snapshot of the quintessential wares Malaysia has to offer, and to get to know the men and women behind them – all under one roof!
Artisanal Excellence
Whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find it here, from textiles and woodwork to woven items, metalwork, batik and ceramics. It’s as much an educative experience as it is a visually rewarding one, with exhibits including craft weaving, culturally influenced interior décor, Malaysian motifs and innovative student creations.
Live weaving demonstrations are always a big draw, where experts show the intricate process using seven different materials. Here you can take the opportunity to get hands-on with all sorts of crafts at the interactive workshops. On top of this, there are also fringe activities on the programme, such as ‘craftainment’ dance performances, themed talks and the chance to taste some authentic Malaysian dishes at a mouth-watering buffet.
Don’t forget to swing by the crafts sales selection where you’ll find items ranging from high-quality fabrics and readyto- wear garments to rattan bags and beaded accessories made by different ethnic groups. Make sure to leave with a little bit of Malaysia on you before heading home!
