Known as Hari Kraf Kebangsaan (HKK) in Malay, National Craft Day is a prominent annual event for the local craft industry and is into its 17th edition. Not just a one-day affair as the name suggests, HKK takes place over a week from 28 February to 11 March at the Kuala Lumpur Craft Complex.
Organised by Kraftangan Malaysia (Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation), the event is made possible by the continuous contribution of local craft entrepreneurs while highlighting the country’s diverse craft scene and providing a platform on which to showcase these wears to a wide audience.
In an effort to empower the craft community, the event also aims to encouraging Malaysians to support locally made products that can be incorporated into living spaces, festival celebrations and personal styles with the concept of ‘Culturising Craft in Lifestyle’.
Held in line with this chosen concept, HKK 2019 will provide an educative and visually rewarding experience with exhibits including craft weaving, culturally-influenced interior décor featuring Malaysian motifs and innovative student creations made with materials like batik, wood and ceramic.
If you’re wondering how weaved pieces are made, head over to the live weaving demonstrations where experts show how it’s done using seven different materials. Take the opportunity to get hands-on with all sorts of craft at the interactive workshops.
A whole lot of other fringe activities are happening too! See what craft industry players and professionals have to say about the latest developments in the craft industry, catch ‘craftainment’ dance performances or have a taste of traditional Malaysian dishes.
You can’t leave HKK without making a stop at the craft sales section. With craft entrepreneurs offering attractive items ranging from high quality textile and ready-to-wear garments to rattan bags and beaded accessories made by different ethnic groups, you won’t be going home empty-handed!
