The folks behind the gut-busting Laugh Die You shows over the last few years are back in force and ready to shake up HGH Convention Centre, as Malaysia’s king of comedy Douglas Lim takes on Singapore’s comedy drag queen Kumar in a not-so noble war of words.
The King
Douglas Lim is to Malaysian comedy what curry is to rice. The seasoned stand-up has been sprinkling his brand of banter on stages here and across the region for two decades. He heads up the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians, one of the country’s most successful comedy tour groups, and has also more than made his mark at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with his hugely successful solo shows, This is Nice in 2018 and This is Awkward in 2019.
Lim’s witty observations, knack for storytelling, impressions and singing combine on stage to create side-splitting sets that have seen him lord over the comedy circuit. Whether he’s ripping into Malaysian politics or other cultural shenanigans, the king never lets his subjects down.
The Queen
In the other corner is the just-turned-50, comediancum- drag queen and one of Singapore’s national treasures, Kumar. This legendary funnyman has never been afraid to make his proclamations and often outrageous jokes that deal in race, sex, government and social norms. His routines have always been on the provocative side, and, in the early days when his career was just kicking off, even attracted the attention of the police.
Scathing and sarcastic, Kumar has never been one to mince his words or pull his punches. You can read all about his fascinating rise to the top in his biography, Kumar: From Rags To Drag, which reveals a life filled with love, laughter and pain.
Hosting the verbal battle between these royals and injecting it with his own wise cracks will be none other than Kavin Jay, Malaysia’s grumpiest uncle who recently scored his first Netflix comedy special. With these three jokers in play, be prepared to laugh yourself silly.
