Like Dataran Merdeka, Stadium Merdeka has cemented its place in Malaysian history by playing a significant role in the country's independence. Built and named after that memorable milestone, it took under a year to construct and was opened on 21 August 1957, 10 days before the Malaysian independence was officialised. That ceremony took place at this stadium, with the first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj reading the declaration and shouting "Merdeka" to the tens of thousands in attendance.
The stadium has since hosted several top sporting events, from Southeast Asian Games to the Muhammad Ali and Joe Bugner fight. It also saw major superstars, with the likes of Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, A. R. Rahman, Jolin Tsai, Metallica, Linkin Park, Bon Jovi, OneRepublic and EXO performing there over the years. Following recent renovations and restoration efforts, the stadium has been awarded a UNESCO Heritage award.
