Born in Glasgow in 1996, Lewis Capaldi found his calling very early. At two, he was honing his abilities on the guitar and drums. Seven years later, he was stretching his vocal cords at pubs, and in his late teens he was fully immersed in music and looking to launch his career.
Capaldi’s singing voice is distinctive enough to stand out favourably, and it didn’t take much for him to garner attention. As with some of his contemporaries, he was discovered via his online song uploads. In 2017 he had released his first extended play, Bloom, with Breach and Bruise following in 2018 and 2019 respectively. May 2019 saw the release of his inaugural studio album, Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, containing popular tracks including Someone You Love, Grace, and Hold Me While You Wait.
Fans of Doctor Who may wonder if he’s the son of Peter Capaldi, the actor who from 2013 to 2017 played the Doctor in the longstanding series. The older Capaldi is actually the younger’s second cousin once removed, and has even appeared in the music video for Someone You Love.
This track is arguably Capaldi’s most famous, lingering at the top spot on the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, while collecting a number of awards on the side. The uprising singer himself has more than a few accolades sitting on his cabinet at home, including Sound of 2018 by BBC, Brand New for 2019 by MTV, and Best British Singer 2019 at the BBC Teen Awards.

If there’s one reason to see him in the flesh, it’s how much thought he puts into his stage performances. “As I was working on the album, one of the main things I kept thinking about was whether I’d have a good time playing these songs live,” Capaldi revealed. “People might come to my shows expecting it to be very serious, but really I just talk a lot of absolute nonsense and try to connect with the audience like they’re my pals. I’m not up there saying, ‘Here’s another one about a girl who broke my heart’ – It’s always much more like, ‘Let’s all just have a laugh, and sing some really sad songs together.”
