We’re used to getting all hyped up when international acts descend on Malaysia, but what about the wealth of local talent in our very own backyard? In recent times, the rising star power of homegrown acts such as Malaysian singer-songwriter Yuna on the world stage has begun to shift attention back onto our own performers. RAWR is 1 Mont Kiara’s contribution towards encouraging the continued spotlighting of Malaysian acts – a merry showcase of music and comedy coupled with mouthwatering food and drink to fill your belly as the entertainment nourishes your soul.
|Popular crooner Ray Cheong steals the hearts of the crowd as he shows off his guitar skills||With the voice of an angel and the face to match, Talitha Tan has it all|
Once featured on Disney Channel’s Disney Hidden Talents while still in high school, the ‘barefoot musician’ Christian B Palencia is beginning to make a name for himself with the recent release of his brand new EP Adrenaline. Joining him on the roster will be Fazz, an independent band started in 2012 that performs a unique blend of pop, blues and swing with an infusion of vaudeville and cabaret music. Then of course we have former 2006 DiGi Celebriteen winner Ray Cheong in the house, who has travelled all over the world and performed with notable artistes such as Yannick Bovy and Pixie Lott.
Also on board is drummer Narmi of KL punk rock band One Buck Short, who will show off his singer-songwriter side with songs that tug at the heartstrings. Next up is the sweet-voiced Talitha Tan, who only decided to pursue singing seriously in the middle of 2013 but has already garnered a following by covering international tunes on Youtube and is now branching out into writing her own songs.
Raven-haired songstress Prema Yin is absolutely dynamite
They say music transcends boundaries, a saying especially true when you watch the captivating entertainer ROZZ, who cites a whole spectrum of influences on his art that includes Barbara Streisand, Freddie Mercury, Diamanda Galas and more. ‘Pocket Dynamite’ Prema Yin will also be looking to pay homage to her Chinese and Indian roots through her compositions, in the process also hoping to learn to be true to herself.
Malaysians love a good joke, and RAWR is set to bring the house down with a cast of crazy comedians lying in wait. Listen to the hilarious experiences of Canadian expatriate Anton Gillich with settling down in Malaysia since he first set foot here in 2004, then be awed at the size of Ross Stephenson’s afro before this funny man uses a combination of psychology knowhow and natural wit to make your day.
Jit Murad livening up the atmosphere
Don’t be fooled by Luwita Hana Randhawa’s charming features – behind the innocent-looking smile is a dry wit and sassy attitude that won her the Best Female Youth Newcomer Award at the Short + Sweet Stand Up Comedy Festival 2012 in Malaysia. Another familiar face in the local stand-up scene is Kavin Jay, whose brand of humour is an eclectic mix of slapstick, edginess and political incorrectness. Rounding up the ensemble is actor, playwright, director and comedian Jit Murad, best known for his alter ego Renee Choy – an effeminate hairdresser with loud opinions.
