Running and endurance events are common in Malaysia, most of them occurring on an annual basis. Take these three March examples.
MCIS LIFE Malaysia Women Marathon
Touted as the only women marathon in Southeast Asia, this race is held in tandem with International Women’s Day on 8 March with the associated theme revolving around generation equality.
Participants can choose one of the four distance categories on offer; the full marathon, half marathon, 10km or a 5km fun run. Additionally, there’s also a charity run for those who wish to help raise funds which will benefit the Malaysian Rare Disease Society.
In the two days leading up to the race, the event sees enlightening talks and a mini expo featuring local and international vendors that are open to the public, all centred on women empowerment.
Powerman Malaysia
Now in its 17th edition, Powerman Malaysia is claimed to be the largest duathlon in Asia. It’s sanctioned by the Asian Triathlon Confederation as a Middle Distance Championship in the 10km-60km-10km category.
Employing a run-bike-run format, the categories are defined by participation type and distance, applying to both men and women. The Individual Classic and Team Relay Classic are set at 10km-60km-10km, while the Individual Short and the Team Relay Short have the distances halved at 5km-30km-5km.
Freshly introduced, the Powerteens category is for 13- to 17-year-olds with a 2km-8km-2km configuration, while two Powerkids classes cater for 9- to 12-year-olds (1km-4km-1km) and 5- to 8-year-olds (0.5-1-0.5km) respectively.
Kuala Lumpur City Day Half Marathon
Kicking off from the historic Dataran Merdeka, this half marathon takes runners all around the heart of the capital. The roads en route include Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Sultan Ismail, Jalan Parlimen and Jalan Ampang.
Seven categories are available for the picking, ranging from a 5km fun run to the 21km half marathon, with a 10km distance in between. Aside from the fun run, each distance is divided between men and women, as well as Malaysian and open categories.
Contenders going the full distance can clap eyes on a number of landmarks, such as the National Monument and the Petronas Twin Towers.
