It’s impossible to talk about comedy in Southeast Asia and not mention the name Kumar. Born Kumarason Chinnadurai, the multi-talented performer has become a Singaporean icon since he made his debut 30 years ago at the now-defunct Boom Boom Room. He just celebrated his 50th birthday and to commemorate that milestone he’s embarking on a nationwide tour that will unleash a slew of new material on Malaysian audiences.
Dubbed Kumar Fifty50, fans can expect a routine filled with his brutally-upfront comedy that will dig deep into the last five decades, navigating everything life has thrown at him thus far. It’s nothing if not colourful, and his experiences and struggles are set to come to life in a light-hearted perspective that’s funnier than any fiction.
Rags To Drags
Kumar’s comedy has always straddled the risqué, and though he is well known for his extravagant and flamboyant stage persona, particularly when in drag, an undercurrent of deep intelligence and wisdom runs through each of his bits. Censorship and conservatism are two issues he’s always had to navigate skilfully while delivering his biting observations on everything from politics and race to sex.
His career has taken him to great heights, not only on the comedy front but also on TV, the theatrical stage, on the silver screen and as an author. Apart from this, his one man shows at home and abroad have become all but legendary, garnering fans from right across the world.
Whether you’re seeing him for the first time, or the umpteenth, be prepared to bowl over with laughter when he takes to the stage. If you’re not in KL on the 27 and 28 of this month, you’ll also be able to catch him at seven other major Malaysian cities – check out the website for more details!
