Neon images with fragmented maxims adorn the walls (Salvador Dali and Buddy Holly star among others), a mammoth LED screen plastered across the ceiling emits spliced up videos and the hive molded wall behind the bar, back-lit with blue and purple lighting, acts as the centre piece to the newly opened Circus in Pavilion KL. The result is a proper crowd magnet, drawing in punters with enough eye candy to give one a serious sugar high. Located in the mall’s trendy new precinct, Fashion Avenue, Circus is the brainchild of The Eatertainment Group, headed up by entrepreneur extraordinaire, Joseph Sabeh Afaki. The group has two other outlets, Al-Amar Lebanese Cuisine on the 6th floor of Pavilion KL, and Al-Amar Express adjacent to Fahrenheit 88, as well as a catering service dubbed Main Course Catering Services. The opening of Circus represents the group’s foray into bar/cocktail lounge territory, however maintaining a keen eye on the food selection as Spanish Executive Chef David Caral has designed a menu that covers all international bases and suits any occasion. From Ahi tuna tartare, to grilled calamari, crispy wild mushroom risotto and a hearty beef stroganov that would make even the staunchest of Russians proud, the food is top notch. Indeed, Circus is one of the participating restaurants in this year’s Malaysia International Gourmet Festival, and with the standards on offer, it will be no surprise if the restaurant takes home a selection of awards. The cocktail menu is one of the main attractions of the show, boasting over 60 concoctions, from classics to the avante garde, and each with a fresh new name to boot. If you’re wondering what type of glass your chosen poison comes in, there are pictures to denote this little detail as well. A minor detail, but adds a certain charm to the menu and may even go a way to helping you choose your next drink. As dinner time comes to an end, the night is only just beginning for revelers at Circus. The music is cranked up and tables cleared away for anyone who feels the need to get down on the dance floor. Djs mix and blend away and live performances on the stage provide the music, and whether you’re there to bust out some moves or rather kick back and chill with your buddies, it’s all fair game. The tagline of Circus is simple: Gather, relax, mix, mingle, flirt, eat, drink. The ultra-modern interior provides the perfect setting for all these things, fluttering effortlessly between modern bistro, cocktail lounge and swanky restaurant. So, if you’re expecting clowns, acrobats, trained animals and trapeze acts, then you’ll be sorely disappointed. What you can expect is a classy new outlet that redefines the social setting and blurs the boundaries between concepts. The Circus is in town!
