The definitive annual running event of the capital, the Kuala Lumpur Marathon has graced the city since 1989, adding ‘Standard Chartered’ to its name in 2009 to reflect its famed title sponsor. It has regularly drawn tens of thousands of runners from across the globe.
Unfortunately, earlier this year, with the threat of COVID-19 quickly becoming one that is sure to linger, the organisers decided to pull the plug on the 2020 KL Standard Chartered Marathon (KLSCM) for safety reasons. All is not lost however, as the people behind KLSCM have recently announced that the event will take place after all, albeit in a very different fashion!
“We hope that the strange times we find ourselves in have not dampened your enthusiasm and passion for running. In fact, we expect that the lack of running events has got you positively itching for a race experience.
“In order to fill this void and galvanise the running community, we are excited to announce the introduction of the inaugural Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon 2020 Virtual Run (KLSCM 2020 VR) which will take place on 5-13 December 2020,” detailed an announcement that popped up on the marathon’s website several weeks ago.
This online marathon will be divided into distance categories that are similar to the previous KLSCM races. Runners can pick from the Full Marathon (42km), Half Marathon (21km), 10km and 5km distances, and can run as an individual or in a team of three.
Runners can run anywhere they want (subject to local Movement Control Order SOPs) and submit their results anytime between the marathon period, meaning they can select any of the nine days of the marathon period to complete their run in a single setting, before submitting the results by 11.59pm 13 December 2020.
To ease data-logging and info-sharing, participants should download the specially developed Kuala Lumpur Standard Chartered Marathon Virtual Run app, which features a GPS-based activity tracker (with map display, distance, time and pace), individual and team leaderboard rankings, augmented reality face filter and an Event feed among others. This app will be available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Exclusive merchandise will also be released to mark this inaugural event, with personalised medals, event tees, sports towels and face masks available for purchase throughout the registration period. Registration is free, and open from the event launch date of 18 November to 4pm on 3 December 2020.
Rainer Biemans, Director of Dirigo Events which is the main organiser of the marathon, said, “We wanted to create something for our runners that would motivate and re-energise everyone about running again because without events to train for, enthusiasm levels often drop easily. And with the pandemic continuing to spread, it is now more important than ever for all of us to maintain our health at optimum levels and keep our immune systems strong.”
“We also understand that a lot of people are struggling financially at the moment and so we decided to make registrations free of charge to encourage as many people as possible to take part,” he added.
