If you grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, you’ll be familiar with sounds of “I love you baby, if it’s quite alright I need you baby”, and “Sherry….baby” on the radio. Golden oldies as we call them, these classic hits are currently being revived all across the globe, in the form of a colourful Broadway musical. The awardwinning Jersey Boys is now making a stop in Kuala Lumpur while on its international tour and is set to rock centre stage at Istana Budaya!
Seen by over 18 million people worldwide, the musical recounts the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, from when a group of bluecollar boys from the mean streets of New Jersey took fate in to their own hands and began an incredible journey to superstardom. Singing on the street corners of New Jersey’s residential areas, The Four Seasons, consisting of Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi are flung into the international limelight, writing hit after perennial hit and taking the charts by storm.
Their efforts led to a whopping 175 million records sold globally, and all before hitting the age of 30! The musical, penned by Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice, follows a documentarystyle format that dramatises the formation, struggles, successes and ultimately, break-up of the group.
This year, the show celebrates its ninth birthday, going on tour within and outside of the United States, and has been avidly watched by a raft of celebrities, most recently Nicole Kidman and Pierce Brosnan. Set to be onstage from mid-April, the two week long performance anticipates a full house every night. Little wonder, as who can resist hits like “Sherry”, “December 1963 (Oh What A Night)”, “My Eyes Adored You”, “Stay”, and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” to name a few.
As a story with origins from the mean streets of New Jersey, one could be pardoned for thinking there may be profanity contained throughout, but rest assured, this performance is clean and children- friendly so bring the whole family and have a blast. Secure your seats for the Grammy-Award-winning show now, as musical enthusiasts and die-hard fans of the Seasons are scrambling for seats!
