Proving that great things do come in small packages, the Short+Sweet festival returns to enchant and enthrall KL audiences this 6 September to 29 October at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre. Featuring over 500 of the country’s rising stars across music, dance, theatre and comedy, Short+Sweet hopes to showcase Malaysia’s enormous wealth of growing talent in the performing arts. As 2017 marks 10 years since the festival’s introduction in KL, a special line-up has been planned for this year’s edition. The SHORT+SWEET theatre portion will run for a record-breaking three weeks this time round, while a new category – Junior Dance – has been added to engage young performers aged 16 and below. So what sets Short+Sweet apart from other performing art festivals? “The appeal of SHORT+SWEET is in its unique format,” explains Festival Director Dato’ Faridah Merican. “Since the festival only premieres new works that are 10 minutes or less, artistes are pushed to stretch their creative muscles. For audiences, there is an element of surprise because you never quite know what to expect. In a single show, you can experience up to 12 different performances. The icing on the cake is that you even get to vote for your favourite,” she added. The performers who get the most votes will then move on to compete at the Gala Finals, where they can win several prizes, including the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Award for Creative Excellence. SHORT+SWEET has a long history of uncovering hidden talent, and has seen artists go on to land major roles in other productions. Acts to look out for this year include a play on finding love in the age of social media; a musical set in a disco night club; and a dance inspired by the music of Sarabande, a stately Spanish dance in triple time. The events are split into different weeks, with the comedy segment happening 6-9 September, followed by the musical portion on 13-16 September, dance from 27 September-7 October, and finally theatre taking place from 11-28 October. Filled with plenty of surprises, laughs and undeniable talent, spectators should leave SHORT+SWEET feeling satisfied with the stage treats on offer.
