While her name may not be quite as instantly recognisable as those of more established stand-ups, this doesn’t in any way mean she lacks the humour chops necessary to make people laugh their heads off.
In fact, Manhattan-born, Dallas-raised and Los Angeles-seasoned Iliza Shlesinger is particularly talented in that regard, something that has not only been convincingly proven in action, but sprinkled with accolades.
At 25, she had the double honour of being both the youngest person and first woman to clinch NBC’s Last Comic Standing title, going through head-to-head elimination showdowns and coming up on top with the rousing approval of fellow comedians.
Little time passed before she became a darling of the comedy circuit, a US entertainment regular sprinkling her wit and whimsy through various platforms – be it hosting, starring, podcasting, guest appearances, writing and more. She also has not one, but four Netflix specials; War Paint, Freezing Hot, Confirmed Kills, and Elder Millennial.
Shlesinger’s brand of funny sees the animated storyteller in her emerging to mete out amusing narratives to gut-busting perfection. To many, her larger-than-life stage presence is irresistibly magnetic.
When unravelling anecdotes, she often puts on voices and slips into characters, gesticulates wildly, and engages the audience, like a great many stand-up veterans. It’s unique to her nonetheless, and makes her a hoot to see in person. Shlesinger picks at any subject she fancies and runs away with it, from personal experiences to popular issues.
The renowned Montreal Just For Laughs Festival and The New York Comedy Festival are only two comedy productions that this comedian has headlined in, significant testaments to her abilities, which she has taken with her internationally on tours. She’s no stranger to United Service Organization efforts as well, supporting her countrymen serving abroad by participating in comedy tours in the Europe, Afghanistan and the Middle East.
Now, through an LOL Events endeavour, she comes to Kuala Lumpur to share some of those comedic abilities, so if you’re a sucker for quality stand-ups, catch her live at Menara Ken TTDI on 16 June!
