After a good three-and-a-half-month lapse because of the MCO lockdown, Malaysian cinemas have finally been given the green light to welcome patrons through their doors once more. Almost all of the movie theatres in the country are resuming operations today, 1 July 2020!
Things are not exactly as they were however, as some modifications to the cinema experience are necessary to minimise COVID-19 risks. There are SOPs to follow – aside from the usual social distancing, contact tracing and hygiene practices that have become a part of the new norm, the seating arrangement of the halls has been changed to maintain decent spacing between patrons. Simply put, only every other seat can be occupied. As another precaution, those aged under 12 and over 60 are not allowed entry into the cinema as of this time.
Each cinema company is also now sporting altered operating hours (do note that not all of their cinema branches may have been opened yet) that may differ over the week, with varying movie listings and schedules. Online and contactless purchasing of tickets are widely favoured.
On a brighter note, there are some offers and promotions to entice the cinema-goer, perhaps the most interesting of which are tickets for reruns of recent movies going for greatly reduced prices! If you have watched them all, don’t worry as these cinemas are showing new releases as well at regular prices. Take a look below for a sample of what major Malaysian cinema players have readied for their return.
[Note: Make sure to check with the respective cinema you intend to visit for the latest and most accurate information on these offers, operation hours, and SOPs!]
Golden Screen Cinemas
Known simply as GSC by locals, this cinema brand has numerous branches throughout the Klang Valley and beyond. Starting today, its patrons can watch reruns of movies released not too long ago for as little as RM5, but as a 1 July 2020-only offer, GSC is presenting the irresistible deal of a complimentary viewing of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle simply by redeeming the promo code ‘JOMGSC00001T1’ on the GSC website or GSC app (subject to terms & conditions). Sizzling meal combo deals can be had for RM8, with a top up of RM5 for popcorn on the side.
Other goodies come in the form of free parking extended to those who watch movies at GSC IOI City Mall and GSC IOI Mall Puchong. Customers just have to show their purchased tickets at the mall’s customer service counter to enjoy this perk. GSC has also thrown in a Facebook giveaway into their reopening offerings mix, with a Samsung Galaxy S20+ smartphone up for grabs.
