‘Tis the season to rejoice! Whether you’re looking for compelling performances in the award-winning Angels in America, heart-warming in The Nutcracker, a space odyssey at the MPO’s Star Wars & Beyond concert, or magic extraordinaire from the Masters of Trickery, the seasonal performance line up has never looked better.
Angels In America
ANGELS IN AMERICA
The highly acclaimed, 1993 Pulitzer Prize winning play by playwright Tony Kushner, Angels in America is a complex, symbol-laden and metaphorically-wrapped examination of AIDS and homosexuality in 1980s America, incorporating themes of confusion, guilt, forgiveness and redemption. Widespread misinformation during this period created an atmosphere of alarmism, making HIV the most misunderstood and politicised epidemic in the world.
This two-part epic has seen returning audiences worldwide for over two decades, always remaining relevant. Fulfilling a 20 year dream and winning the Boh Cameronian Arts Award, director Christopher Ling has carried it to the Malaysian theatre stage with an impressive local cast to present both parts – Millennium Approaches and Perestroika – of this celebrated drama.
MEN IN TUTUS PRESENTS THE NUTCRAKER
On Christmas Eve, at the stroke of midnight, young Clara is led into an enchanted world by a valiant nutcracker soldier who walks by her side as she journeys into the Land of Snow and the Kingdom of Sweets. A wonderful adventure begins as they meet the Sugar Plum Fairy who bids everyone to dance in her honour. And dance they do, to Tchaikovsky’s glittering score!
Men In Tutus Presents The Nutcracker
Meanwhile, the nutcracker and his toy army must battle the evil, seven-headed Mouse King, and protect Clara from his legion of minions. Get ready to see this most quintessential of Christmas tales performed in a new light. This festive season, the all-male Men In Tutus bring their hilarious version of the two-part ballet. A cherished tradition, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, provides an unforgettable spark to everyone’s holiday frolic.
STAR WARS & BEYOND
Held in conjunction with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this concert by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra is a galactic voyage through a string of iconic music pieces by John Williams, Gustav Holst and Richard Strauss.
Be prepared to go on an unforgettable deep space odyssey through some of classical music’s most well-known compositions in the hallowed halls of the MPO. With the Brass Quintet providing the ultimate countdown to open the concert, the main orchestra will be joining forces with the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, promising a truly mesmerising experience. The evening will blast off with Holst’s The Planets, a popular seven-movement suite used in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.
The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra – Star Wars & Beyond
The highlight will be John Williams’ Oscar winning, grand symphonic score to Star Wars. The iconic theme is among the most widely recognised piece of music in film history, and remains the highest grossing non-popular music recording of all-time. Few people are lucky enough to hear it played by a live orchestra, so don’t miss your chance.
TRICKSTARS, THE MASTERS OF TRICKERY
If you’re after something altogether more mystifying in nature, but with the same elements of music, comedy and theatre in the mix, then the Masters of Trickery are right up your alley. Taking place at Sunway Lagoon’s Amphitheatre, this world-class show stars five magicians and illusionists from Las Vegas and Europe, each with a slew of tricks up their sleeve.
Trikstars, The Masters of Trickery
The show features The Wizardry of Phelston Jones, who may just include you in one of his mesmerising illusions. The animated antics of Sylvester the Jester blur the boundaries of cartoon and real life, while the King Charles Troupe will make you gasp in delight at their one-wheeled wacky game of unicycle-basketball.
Rounding out the line up are Dutch World Champions of Magic, Nightmares, who combine storytelling, vibrant visuals and magic to stunning effect and finally the choreographed precision of Sebastian & Kristina from Hungary, merging the arts of dance and magic.
