Three Cheers For Three Territories Held on the 1st February with celebrations over the month, Federal Territories Day marks the moment in 1974 when the Sultan of Selangor handed over Kuala Lumpur, then part of the state of Selangor, to the federal government for direct administration. Labuan followed suit in 1984, and Putrajaya in 2001, forming a trinity of territories that this day pays homage to. As one of the country’s key events on the calendar, celebrations on the day will see each territory host their own festivities in line with the theme ‘Cheerful Territories, Prosperous People’.
