While the nation gets ready to celebrate Halloween with spooky movies, pumpkin carvings and trick or treats, it’s not the only celebration going on nationwide! In Penang, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is set to take place, giving visitors a chance to immerse themselves in ancient Chinese culture. In Sabah, the World Amateur Golfers Championship 2019 Finals will commence, welcoming players from over 40 countries. Lastly, the Siniawan Heritage Fiesta in Sarawak honours the big cultures of the small town.
Nine Emperor Gods Festival
On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, it is believed that spirits of the Nine Emperor Gods descend from the stars to earth – possessing mediums and putting them into trace-like states. At this time of the year, one of the largest temples in Butterworth known as the Nine Emperor Gods Temple will be the busiest it’s ever been.
The celebration is somewhat similar to Thaipusam (a key Hindu festival) and involves worshippers dressed in white holding up incense or candles. Some even display their dedication by fire-walking and skewing their cheeks with spears as long as nine metres while awaiting the arrival of the Gods – who are known to bring prosperity and good health.
Throughout the nine days, devotees adhere to rituals like abstaining from meat and chanting prayers at the temple while bells are tinkled. At the end of the celebration, a grand procession of boats leads the Gods off to the sea, sending them ‘home’.
