Last year, Euphrasia – The Musical was presented at three venues across Malaysia – Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Kota Kinabalu – and it was received encouragingly well. This year, the people behind the production have decided to bring it back, with three shows happening this month.
The Good Shepherd Sisters are the folks responsible for putting together this musical, which details the life of Saint Mary Euphrasia Pelletier, a Roman Catholic nun who founded the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. Known by some as the The Sisters of the Good Shepherd, this is a religious order with a particular interest in the well-being of women and children.
When the musical was staged in 2019, director Dominic Lucien Luk, who returns to helm this year’s shows, said, “We want everyone watching the show to feel Euphrasia’s strength and her passion for life, and most definitely, her passion for people; to fight any obstacles in life, and to realise that we should never stand alone.”
He looks after a cast of 60 actors as they take on the various roles of the story, while a 13-strong orchestra supplies the music. Renowned composer Mia Palencia wrote the music, and the libretto was penned by Terence Toh and Cheah Ui Hua, a skilled pair of writers with deep admiration for the subject of the script and her storied life. From her interesting youth in the wake of the French Revolution, to the realisation of her bold ideas to make life better for women and children, the musical covers all the juicy bits.
Assuming the lead role is Nikki Palikat, who won praise for her portrayal of Euphrasia last year. Helping her unfurl the story on stage are other seasoned actors, including Qahar Aqilah as St John Eudes, Junji Delfino as Countess D’Andigne, Ho Soon Yoon as Count Augustine De Neuville, and Alia Kearney as Ashura.
