Haunted houses go hand-in-hand with Halloween which is fast approaching as October numbers its days. KL-ites are about to get a dose of dread with a brand-new attraction that turns the traditional haunted house from a walk-through to a drive-through. Presented by Pepsi, the first in a series of Icebox thematic drive-ins, Karak: Haunted Highway, will have you trembling in your car!
Billed as Malaysia’s first immersive horror drive-in, Karak puts you right in the centre of spine-tingling stories that unfold as you ease your car into specially constructed bays. Kitted out with panoramic LED displays and state-of-the-art sound tech, each section is designed to deliver the fear factor and leave you on tenterhooks.
Elevating the experience to hair-raising heights will be live actors and other theatrics that will engage unwitting passengers in numerous way and make sure you drive away with a more-than-memorable experience. We can’t say exactly what you’ll find on the 15-20 minute journey through darkness, but prepare for ghosts, ghouls, zombies and other creatures of the night – all out to get you! With the support of established haunted housers at Hauntu (located at The Linc), you can be sure of a terror-inducing time.
The experience is named after the infamous Kuala Lumpur-Karak expressway, which is by many accounts one of the most haunted highways in the world. A long list of tragic events, disturbing sightings, unsettling rumours and urban legends are attached to this 60-kilometre stretch of road that connects Gombak in Selangor to Karak in Pahang. The phantom yellow Volkswagen Beetle and the lost schoolboy wandering along the road are the two more well-known phenomena that countless drivers have claimed to have encountered.
From 28 October to 8 November, The MarqE at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre will turn into the eerie road and at RM120 (RM100 if you buy tickets right now) per vehicle, this is an event not-to-be-missed. Fully compliant with COVID-19 SOPs, passengers can rest easy knowing that they are safe – at least on this front! A note to those that have photo-sensitivities however – there are sudden flashes of light akin to strobes along the way.
Organised by Livescape Group and Hitman Solutions, Karak: Haunted Highway kicks off a new line of Icebox attractions – in-car experiences that will feature a range of themed drives and theatrical stories all made real using a combination of technology and human elements. With the resurgence of drive-in cinemas and the craving for innovative attractions, Icebox should be a winning formula we can’t wait to see more of!
