Packing in 40 shows at 10 of KL’s finest venues all across September, DiverseCity is set to turn the capital into a global stage once again. Bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary performances, Malaysia’s biggest international performing arts festival will feature everything from heartwarming theatre to animated dance shows.
Joining the mix are programmes in literature, music, and the visual arts, including a photography exhibition on the streets of KL. The aim of the festival is to bring together these five disciplines to showcase the diversity of arts and culture.
“The performing art is a powerful form of non-verbal communication which helps us make sense of life and provides comfort and solace,” says Festival Director Datin Sunita Rajakumar, who firmly believes that the arts stimulate intuition, creativity and above all, emotional understanding.
I Am Ravana
Stage Lights Up
On the dance front, the Australian-based Saraswati Mahavidhyalaya presents I Am Ravana, a saga of love, lust, honour, desire and death. Another visual spectacle comes from the Makyong Kijang Emas Group, who bring to the stage fantastical northern Malaysian legends that capture the imagination.
Returning to the festival is master of physical theatre Wolfe Bowart with Cloud Soup, where shadow puppetry, illusions, comedy and film unite. Also featuring on the line-up is Joanne Ryan and her multi-award winning show Eggsistentialism which examines the hows and whys of reproducing, and if it’s really all that necessary.
The musical diversity in this year’s Festival is impressive as well with jazz from Malaysian group Mohar Mohram, a traditional Chinese zither performance from local performer Sara Heng, oriental classical and western classical sounds in the returning Spectrum and the KL Sape Collective alongside a range of guest artistes set to deliver a most memorable concert.
