The Temple of Fine Arts is hosting one of Malaysia’s most prolific Bharathanatyam artists this month, for a performance woven around the number seven. Ajith Bhaskaran Dass will take to the stage along with core dancers from his academy, Suvarna Fine Arts, for 120 minutes of uninterrupted dance to present Sapthashree, Nuanced Numerical.
The internationally acclaimed Dass is well known for his vibrant and innovative theatrical presentations, having trained under some of Malaysia’s most renowned dance gurus including Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. Among the many highlights of his career is a recent collaboration with Rama Vaidyanathan, one of the world’s leading exponents Bharathanatyam, touring the Southeast Asian region extensively to bring this unique brand of dance to the masses.
In Sapthashree, the focus falls on the stillness within energy, featuring rhythmic and melodic variations that are almost mathematical in nature. These are some of the defining characteristics of classic Bharatanatyam.
Featuring original music by Delhi based composers Dr Vasudevan Iyengar and K Venkateshwaran, the performance revolves around the number seven – a number revered in civilisations and cultures throughout history. Through religious mystical symbolisms to daily life, the number seven is inexplicably linked to our lives. Seven days of the week, seven colours of the rainbow, seven musical notes, seven deadly sins and so on.
Using the versatile vocabulary and complex rhythms of Bharatha language, along with evocative music and visuals, Sapthashree weaves this concept into the choreography.
“I am always inspired by the poetry of numbers that is used in Bharathanatyam rhythmic sequences. I always envision dancing ‘numbers’ and that is my impetus in choreography apart from the text and melody,” says Ajith.
Dass is an individual at the forefront of Odissi and Bharatanatyam in Malaysia, and Sapthashree is an original composition not to be missed. A live orchestra will accompany Dass and his dancers as they take to the stage, dancing, as it were, with numbers in mind.
