If you grew up surrounded by anime and manga, and still know your way around them, chances are you would have already heard about Comic Fiesta. It would be hard to overlook the country’s definitive convention covering all things Anime, Comics and Games (ACG).
Having begun in 2002 as a modest exhibition, Comic Fiesta quickly gained traction within the local ACG crowd. It has evolved into a reliable year-end fixture; a lively showcase of the culture associated with the scene that attracts droves of illustrators, artists, cosplayers, artists, key industry players and fans from the region. Over 50,000 attendees were recorded in 2017.
The Fiesta even has its own proprietary mascots – Coffy, Tea, Michael, Mi and Yin Yong. Each possessing an interesting backstory, these endearing characters are certain to be in plain sight, along with other goodies that have become commonplace in a Comic Fiesta.
ACG In All Its Glory
It’s already a treat to simply saunter about taking in the scenes before you; with cosplayers taking the forms of various ACG pop culture characters and references, photo opportunities literally walk by you on the regular. Nearby costume vendors means you can even join them, if you haven’t already dressed up at home!
Catch more costumed personas at the Creative Art Market, which also houses the Basic and Premium Art Booths. These are where artists, from casual creatives to established pros, pitch camp and their skills.
Special guests, sought-after collectibles, engaging presentations, themed products and services, friendly competitions, challenges, and activities are among what you can encounter as you wander around as well.
Cosplay International is an example, in which top local cosplayers try to outdo each other. Speedpainter Showdown appeals to the artistic lot, with 15-minute speed rounds to determine who can draw better. Participate in the Stamp Rally by collecting special stamps to redeem prizes at the ‘Coffytiam’. For a bit of a laugh, there’s even a Table Flipping Challenge, just like the meme!
You don’t have to be an otaku to appreciate these and much more occurring over these two days of ACG celebration.
