Back to defend his title at the 9th CIMB Classic this month at The Player’s Club Kuala Lumpur, Pat Perez will have his work cut out for him as a star-studded line up of players will be gunning for the coveted trophy and a slice of the US$7 million prize purse. Among the field of 78 players will be two-time CIMB Classic champion Justin Thomas, Ryder Cup star Paul Casey, Japanese ace Hideki Matsuyama and plenty more.
The Classic is the sole PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament in Southeast Asia with a golden track record for drawing the elite of the golfing world since swinging into action eight years ago. In that time it has also proven a successful launch pad for many of the game’s fledgling stars.
Winner of nine PGA Tournaments and 2017 Player of the Year, Thomas will be one to watch as he aims to score a hat trick of wins at this year’s Classic. Another player currently on fire is last year’s CIMB Classic runner-up Keegan Bradley who recently snapped a six-year title drought by picking up the BMW Championship.
Gracing the event also will be World Golf Hall-of-Famers Ernie Els and Davis Love III, holding a combined 119 international victories, including 19 and 21 PGA TOUR wins respectively. Meanwhile, representing Malaysia and squaring up to the global stars will be two golfers, the winner of last month’s CIMB National Championship and the highest ranked Malaysian on the Official World Golf Ranking as of October 1 – likely to be Gavin Green.
With the newly upgraded 18-hole West Course, resurfaced with more enhanced grass species, one of the tournament’s most intensely fierce player fields, and extensive hospitality features during the four-day event, fans look forward to an ace experience whether by the tee boxes, fairways, bunkers or green surrounds.
