Packed with energy and protein that by many accounts were key to mankind evolving into the intelligent beings of today, meat in all its forms remains a key part of diets around the world. We’ve gathered together a few choice restaurants in and around KL that specialise in its preparation, whether chicken, beef, pork or lamb so if you’re hankering for some flesh, we’ve got you covered.
Ben’s Charcoal Chicken
“Burn baby burn” read the neon lights that welcome diners to this cheery eatery in the Bangsar suburb of Lorong Kurau. The phrase captures nicely what they do here, at least to cuts of juicy chicken. Using charcoal and flames, the meat is charred to tasty perfection with unbeatably smokey flavours and textures.
The restaurant’s Josper oven is the key ingredient here, a part-grill-part-oven that gives the chicken its rich and robust BBQ flavour. Whether it’s the Original Grilled or Spicy Piri-Piri Grilled, you’ll be in poultry heaven and together with sides like the Benten Bonito Fries or Roasted Sesame Yuzu Coleslaw, The Big Group have found another winning formula.

From another famed culinary collective in Malaysia, The Marini’s Group, comes this luxury steakhouse that specialises in dry- and wet-aged beef that’s been cured in the restaurant’s custom-built aging cellar. If you’re looking for prime cuts of Angus and Wagyu, it doesn’t really get much better than this – buttery soft meat that’s packed with savoury notes you’ll struggle to find in other restaurants in the capital.
From tenderloins, filet mignons, ribeyes-on-the-bone to the famous Tomahawk, cuts are all handpicked by Cavaliere Modesto Marini to ensure quality, and then expertly seared by the kitchen team for just about the best steak you’ll ever taste. No sauce is required here, just perhaps a touch of salt to make the natural meaty flavours sing.

When it comes to BBQ pork ribs, few joints in town (and arguably all of Southeast Asia) do it better than Naughty Nuri’s. Founded in Bali by American Brian Aldinger and Indonesian Isnuri Suryatmi, the brand started life as a tiny warung (a street-style eatery) in Ubud, and has since spread to several locations in Indonesia, Australia, China, Thailand and Malaysia, which is home to four outlets.
Pork is the name of game here and you can savour it in a few different forms, but the star is the 1995 Signature BBQ Spare Ribs which are coated in a rich layer of sweet and spicy, spice-laden sauce, with just the right amount of tang and smokiness. Pork chops, satay, burgers, skewers and the famous Babi Guling (suckling pig roast) are all equally as tasty.
