With Halloween just around the corner, the time is ripe for the jitters to kick in as anything from a spooky display to a good old jump scare is fair game, for the most part. Thankfully for the scare addict in KL, there are numerous sites in the vicinity capable of summoning goose bumps with real ease.
Naturally, there should be horror movies, Halloween parties, and even haunted festivals like the Nights of Fright 7 at Sunway Lagoon making their rounds during this period, but there are also other means to chill your blood. These are some places not far away that, in their own ways, are rather good at feeding your fear.
A Haunting Place
A haunted house at heart, but with meticulous plotlines, acting performances and scary elements to intensify the horror, Hauntu is a unique experience that substantiates its name, which is a play on the phrase “haunt you” and the word hantu (ghost in Malay).
The audience becomes part of the story that unfolds in an eerie colonial hotel, assuming a role, interacting with the hotel staff and environment, navigating tricky mazes and unravelling mysteries. Choices they make will affect the outcome of their tale.
Elaborately structured and involved, the hotel’s overarching story is based on self-contained episodes, each rooted in a different era with period touches on everything. This time, The Tourist episode greets players, set in 1957.
Trapped And Petrified
It’s all too easy to be taken by the daunting thrill of escaping a hairy predicament; be it a horde of pursuers, a paranormal presence, or a macabre place. Escape games can give you more than a taste of the real thing, while turning up the fright levels for good measure.
Malaysia’s first real-life interactive escape game is what Escape Room presents itself as, and it has such effective scare inducers as The Vampire Chronicles, in which players go head-to-head with the king of vampires, and The Slaughter House, which pits them against a serial killer.
Fifthroom, which has a game master to guide players, generates unrest through devious stories featuring morbid elements, like a murderous clown in Haha Circus and a dark disappearance in Hide And Seek.
Breakout meanwhile asks players to become one of the few pre-set characters in order to beat the game, which in certain examples are made to mess with the psyche. Mr Oswald’s Greatest Show sees them held prisoner in a baleful theatre, while Cerebrum leaves one wondering how they wound up in an unknown place.
Immersed In Terror
Virtual reality technology has only improved over time, fine-tuning its ability of throwing people into really convincing scenarios. There are some astonishing VR games and setups out there, like those that will make one break out in a cold sweat.
Horror-themed titles make up a big chunk of VR games, and due to this popularity it’s not difficult to find something whose subject matter is terrifying enough to scare the pants off players. Take Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment, which explores the ruins of the deserted Chicago World’s Fair in 1894. This can be experienced at The Void, touted as Asia’s first hyper-reality venue, which also features the Ghostbusters doing their thing in New York City.
Closer to the city centre is the sprawling VR/AR arena known as The Rift, which has nail-biting games such as Dimension 13, a search-and-rescue mission under ominous circumstances, and Outbreak Origins with hordes of realistic undead prowling about, on the hunt for blood.
VAR Live My
A massive VR theme park, VAR Live My also has some sinister offerings, such as The Others, which takes place in a horrifyingly creepy cabin, and Horror Hospital that charts an uneasy path through a hospital abandoned for good reasons.
