18 July 2019: Citizens got a taste of Borneo culture at The Largest 2019 Borneo Festival in KL
Organised by Sunway Velocity Mall and Borneo Street KL, The Largest 2019 Borneo Festival in KL took place from 17 to 21 July at the Main Atrium of Sunway Velocity Mall.
The five-day event allowed Borneo vendors to showcase their culture through a variety of elements including handicraft, dances and exotic delicacies.
Highlights of the festival included Sago Worm Eating Challenge and the Borneo Blowpipe Charity Challenge – where Sunway Velocity Mall donated RM100 to the Penan Empowerment Networking Association (PENA) for every target hit.
There were also over 25 booths with vendors from Borneo tribes like Penans, Kadazans, Dusuns, Bidayuhs and Ibans who sold handmade goods such as woven baskets, beaded accessories and hand-sewn batik clothing.
Alongside that, vendors also dispalyed Borneo dishes like bambangan (a fruit found in Borneo similar to mangoes), hinava (raw fish slices in Chilli and lime marinate) and tuak (rice wine from Borneo fields that is fermented for up to three years).
“If we can’t fly everyone to Borneo, then we shall bring Borneo to everyone! It is our way to show the public that they can always count on Sunway Velocity Mall to deliver the best experiential events that would elevate not only their shopping experience, but their daily lives as well. On top of that, this is also our effort to showcase the beauty of Borneo in order to boost tourism in Malaysia,” said Sunway Velocity Mall General Manager Phang Sau Lian.
Handicraft demonstrations, food tasting sessions and mini educational tours also took place throughout the colourful event.
