Art Expo Malaysia Plus returns to MATRADE this month, bringing with it some of the finest artwork from all four corners of the nation.
Few events on the Malaysian calendar come close to matching the size and scale of Art Expo Malaysia Plus (AEMP), the region’s longest running and most prestigious affair of its kind. Now in its 11th year, the event has been drawing top-tier galleries from around the world since its inception and is attended by the art cognoscenti, serious collectors and anyone with even a passing appreciation for the arts.
Established in 2007 by art philanthropist Datuk Vincent Sim, the goal of the expo has always been to provide a platform on which interest for the arts could be nurtured and promoted. The event has been pivotal in transforming Kuala Lumpur into a Southeast Asian art hub and last year saw sales upwards of RM17 million and a visitorship of over 25,000.

This year’s visual feast will see some 2,000 works of art from 70 established and reputable galleries covering the cavernous grounds of the Matrade Exhibition and Convention Centre. The participating galleries hail from 25 countries, each with their own booths and zones, and some with master artists in tow. From paintings and sculptures to photography and installations, the whole spectrum of visual and fine arts is represented at AEMP.
Who’s Here This Year?
Malaysia makes its presence felt with the biggest contingent of galleries, including both well established and new players in the scene. These galleries will represent more than 100 local artists, from pioneers to emerging talent.
Among the Malaysian galleries are names such as Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers, Core Design Gallery, G13 Gallery and Art WeMe Contemporary Gallery – the last of which will be representing renowned Chinese artist Sanzi, and Taiwanese artists Liao Ying Hsi and Lo Ch’ing.
Forming the second largest exhibitor group, Singapore will be present with six galleries, which includes the esteemed Art Xchange Gallery, ArtBlue Studio, Art Porters, Gnani Arts, and White Space Art Asia. Art Porters will be representing the husband-and-wife duo of French artist Arnaud Nazare-Aga and Filipino artist Adeline, famous for their colourful, bright sculptures.
Meanwhile, long-standing participant ATR Gallery from Spain returns, and is expected
to draw crowds with a prominent selection of works by masters including Picasso, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali. Other works expected to generate strong interest include those from France’s Galerie Bruno Massa, Mexico’s X Espacio and Australia’s Lethbridge Gallery – all making their debut at AEMP.

A special section this year will be devoted to internationally renowned Malaysian artist Awang Damit Ahmad, whose works have achieved soaring records at Sotheby’s, Christie’s and local auction houses. This tribute will showcase works from his Essence Of Culture series, Marista series and Iraga series.
Another exclusive visual experience comes courtesy of Starhill Gallery’s TSG 1895, which will collaborate with artist Stephen Menon, famed for his Tunku, P.Ramlee and Mao series, while Saged Gallery presents Kim Il Tae’s mixed 24K gold and oil on canvas series
eye-catching from a distance!
As always, there will be a Cultural Exchange section which sees participation from 12 Embassies – Belgium, Croatia, Italy, Romania, Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Mongolia, Iran, and Jordan – each of which represents one solo artist from its country.
A Solo Exhibition Zone will also form part of the grounds, featuring artists such as Vince Low, Mah Chen, and Kenji Ichikawa. Art talks on a variety of subjects by these and
other luminaries will be held throughout the four-day period. Keep an eye out as well for the 92-year-old Taiwanese Chinese Ink Grandmaster Prof. Li Chi Mao, who will be exhibiting
pieces from his recent work.
Whether you’re a serious buyer, a gallery owner, a career artist or just someone that likes to look at art occasionally, Art Expo Malaysia Plus is a not-tobe- overlooked event. At no other time in the year is there such a large concentration of art activity under one roof. And as a totally free event, there’s really no reason not to visit it this month!
