Wander into Richard Koh Fine Art from 5-28 November and you’ll come face to face with some interesting statements courtesy of Malaysian artist Izat Arif. Gentle Reminders is his first solo exhibition at the gallery and it comprises 10 new works from his compelling warning signs series.
Mirroring the style seen in common everyday signage that one encounters on the streets or elsewhere, each piece is reflexive in nature with a distinctive ironic edge. Izat uses irony here as a coping mechanism that helps resolve contradictions in terms of social requirements as an artist.
Though a multidisciplinary artist, Izat sticks to one particular style in this series, employing a flat finish using automotive paint techniques – which serves as the ideal medium to get his message across in this series.
At its core, the works come together as a reminder for the artist of his privileged position and to spur his journey through the sometimes overwhelming world of contemporary art. To guide others, Izat leaves behind these warning signs for newbies and Gentle Reminders is essentially an impassioned plea to heed the warningrt
