Trumpets, trombones and saxophones abound as the World Youth Jazz Festival returns to Malaysia for a fourth instalment of feet-tapping carnival fun.
Running from 1-3 May, WYJF is taking to the streets as Kuala Lumpur’s jazz capital, Jalan Mesui, is decked out with an enormous stage to ensure the party never ends on the bustling road. Themed ‘Happy Happy @ Jalan Mesui’, this year’s edition of the musical extravaganza will see the whole street transformed into a vibrant party as the every single bar and restaurant along it will all be hosting free nightly jazz showcases.
Among the acts playing throughout the three-day festival will be Slef Vesitra, who has made a name for himself by playing three guitars simultaneously; local college student band Twelfnote; Hady Afro, one of the fastest-growing names on the international jazz scene; teenage Malaysian sextet Nada Akustika; and many many more.
The Jalan Mesui hangouts participating in this year’s festival are Nagaba, Pisco Bar, Table 23, Feeka, No Black Tie, Calavera, Indiana, Lobby, and Lust, while Lima Blas will be designated as the quiet area for anyone wishing to ‘take 5’ from the party. The various hotels along the road will be offering special rates and discounts to anyone attending the event – Rainforest B&B, The Mesui Hotel and PARKROYAL Serviced Suites are expected to be loaded with Jazz afficionados and partygoers all weekend long.
The festival follows on from UNESCO declaring 30 April to be International Jazz Day, which will be commemorated by Jalan Mesui mainstay No Black Tie putting on a festival-opening bonanza featuring the very best jazz acts from around the world.
This will be just a sign of things to come, however, as KL readies itself for three days of jazz brilliance with some of the best young artists from around the world descending on Malaysia’s capital.
The three-day celebrations will be closed out on May 3 at No Black Tie by regular headliners Bassment Syndicate alongside a selection of ‘NBT All Stars’, who will play a string of infectious pieces into the early hours.
Prepare to have your long May weekend jazzed up with an unforgettable gala at Jalan Mesui!
