A synergy of storytelling and movement, where the arts combine in seamless fashion to take over the senses, Cré is set to light up the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre once again this month. It did so the first time round last year, where the show received critical acclaim for its thought-provoking and forward-thinking design.
Structured around a story of creation – cré meaning Earth in Old Irish – this new age circus production incorporates gravity-defying feats and immersive storytelling with the human body as the key medium.
Using the four elements of nature as a foundation, performers interpret each in extraordinary ways – through aerial acrobatics, contortion, flow dance and choreographed routines – all set against mesmerising LED backdrops.
Cré Arts Asia, the mega-troupe behind the show, was created when award- winning physical arts theatre company Viva Circus and leading contemporary circus performing arts group Psycusix joined forces a few years ago. Each entity has cemented its reputation as pioneers in the performing arts world, delivering experimental and unique productions across the region.
“Gone are the days where animals and clowns were used as the main players in a circus show. In the Cre Arts Asia show restage, only passionate artistes populate the performance, using elements like pyrotechnics, gravity-defying acts and aerialist flow to tell a story,” says Production and Event Director Chris Lo of the upcoming show.
The show is nothing if not innovative, making use of things as simple as bubbles, to spinning orbs of fire and beyond. Those sitting close enough to the fiery orbs will be able to feel the heat as they gaze at the hypnotic displays. Composition and production come together in perfect unity, making clever use of stage space and lighting throughout.
While animated backdrops and next-level lighting add a futuristic twist to the show, the original romance and allure of the circus as it were is not lost. Human strength, flexibility and aerial stunts all lie at the core and indeed, many of the performers have won international accolades and starred in other world-renowned shows around the world.
“The experience and expertise of Viva Circus and Psycusix in putting up a quality performance that comes with both the thrills and the depth in story-telling is second to none,” adds Lo.
Suitable for the whole family, the second instalment of the show will be bigger, brighter and more entrancing as the cast of world-class performers take to the stage for the multidisciplinary showcase. Prepare to have your eyes opened and mind dazzled as they bring you the story of Cré!
